JSP Family Counselling Service

A confidential service aimed at helping family members and carers

Caring for someone who has experienced a brain injury can be demanding and can change family life forever. It is often said that brain injury happens to the whole family and that the other family members are the real victims.

JSP offers a counselling service to family members, carers and others who may have been affected after someone significant in their life has been injured or become disabled. This specialist service is delivered by a BACP registered counsellor/occupational therapist who has extensive experience of working with people with brain injury and other disabilities and their families.

What is counselling and how can it help?

Family members and carers can experience distress, anxiety, guilt, anger and depression. Often people have no one to talk things over with or feel even more confused or unhappy by advice and judgements of well meaning friends, family and others. Sometimes they just need an understanding person to talk to.

It can be helpful in these situations to talk to someone who has an understanding of the impact and implications of the difficulties associated with brain injury and other disabilities and who is completely separate to the rest of their life.

Counselling can help people to deal with their emotions and find a more productive way of coping through a difficult time in their life. These sessions provide a time to explore whatever issues are important to you with someone who really listens carefully without judgement.
